What is Premature Ejaculation (PE)?
The term Premature Ejaculation (PE) has, over the years, been given many different and varied meanings.
Some will term Premature Ejaculation (PE) as being when the man ejaculates before his partner reaches orgasm (climaxes/comes/cums) most of the time, whereas some definitions will define some sort of time constraint, for example, calling it Premature Ejaculation (PE) if the man reaches orgasm and ejaculates within two minutes of sex starting.
One thing that is common to most, if not all definitions of Premature Ejaculation (PE), is that it is felt that the man has a lack of control over when he ejaculates (comes/cums), and often ejaculates before he wants to.
How Many Men are Affected by Premature Ejaculation (PE)?
Estimates vary, because it depends on their definition of Premature Ejaculation (PE), but estimates show that as many as 40% - 50% of men regularly experience Premature Ejaculation (PE), with most men experiencing Premature Ejaculation (PE) at some time in their lives.
Premature Ejaculation (PE) is most common among men who are having sex for the first few times, and most men could experience Premature Ejaculation (PE) during extreme levels of sexual excitement or stimulation.
Premature Ejaculation (PE) can also be quite specific. A man, for example, may experience Premature Ejaculation (PE) during vaginal sex, but may be perfectly OK during masturbation for example.
What is Premature Ejaculation (PE) Also Known As?
Premature Ejaculation (PE) is sometimes knows as PE, premature climax, premature orgasm, rapid orgasm, rapid ejaculation, premature climax, rapid climax, coming too soon (or cumming too soon), loss of ejaculation control, and uncontrolled male orgasm.
Does Premature Ejaculation (PE) Matter?
The simple answer that it matters if a man (or a couple) feel that their Premature Ejaculation (PE) is having a negative effect on their sex lives.
This is why the ‘time’ definition of Premature Ejaculation (PE) can be problematic.
One man may last for two minutes after entering their partner before orgasm and ejaculation (coming/cuming) and be perfectly satisfied with that, whereas another man might last ten minutes, or twenty minutes, and still feel that he has ejaculated (orgasmed) before he wanted to.
When using the orgasm (ejaculating / coming) before the partner definition of Premature Ejaculation (PE), this in no way takes account of how long the partner lasts before orgasm. If someone’s partner lasts for over an hour, but they are happy to orgasm (ejaculate) within ten minutes, then that shouldn’t be considered as Premature Ejaculation (PE), simply because in this case, the man is happy with his sexual performance, and is satisfied by the sex.
Premature Ejaculation (PE) and Anxiety
Some men will feel that having Premature Ejaculation (PE) somehow makes them ‘look bad’, or may make them feel ‘less of a man’, and this can of course make them feel anxious about it.
Often, when a man is anxious about Premature Ejaculation (PE), the Premature Ejaculation (PE) can be made worse by the anxiety, or can develop into other problems, such as Impotence, Erectile Dysfunction (ED), a lack of self esteem or self confidence, or even depression.
What Causes Premature Ejaculation (PE)?
In my experience in treating men with Premature Ejaculation (PE), the most common causes are psychological in nature, and often include:
- Unresolved psychological conflicts
- Performance Anxiety - that is to say, worrying about what a partner will think of their sexual performance
- Fear of being judged
- Anticipation of Premature Ejaculation (PE) happening
- Underlying anxiety or stress
- Worrying about past experiences
- Having grown up in an environment where sex was seen as ‘dirty’, or where sexuality was often suppressed or used to induce guilt
(Sometimes, Premature Ejaculation (PE) can be caused by a physical cause such as an infection, so it’s always an idea to talk to your doctor).
Can Premature Ejaculation (PE) be treated?
Yes, the right kind of therapy can help greatly with Premature Ejaculation (PE).
