Low Self Confidence and Low Self Esteem

Those things that we sometimes describe as 'shyness', 'low self confidence' or 'low self esteem', can often be symptoms of social anxiety (social phobia).

Often, a person suffering from social anxiety (social phobia) may not be able to hold eye contact, and this can sometimes be an indication of low-self esteem.

Social Anxiety (Social Phobia) In The Workplace

As the workplace can so often be the place where we meet with confrontational situations, this can be a place where someone with social anxiety (social phobia) can feel very uneasy.

Another situation that can make the person with social anxiety (social phobia) very uncomfortable, is where they are in direct contact with figures of authority in the workplace, such as supervisors and managers.

Coping Mechanisms of Social Anxiety (Social Phobia)

As we've mentioned, parties and social situations can be really uncomfortable for anyone suffering with social anxiety (social phobia).

A common coping mechanism for the socially anxious (social phobic), is to use something like alcohol to help the person 'loosen up' before putting themselves in a social situation.

This helps the socially anxious (socially phobic) person to lose some of their inhibitions, making the social situation a little more bearable.

Whether the socially anxious (socially phobic) person uses alcohol, or some other form of substance, such as drugs or tranquilizers for example, they can often become addicted to them.
